Mechanical space

Mechanical space
Mechanics is one of the most important theories in physics. It is commonly used to describe the behavior of physical bodies
when subjected to forces or displacements, and the subsequent effect of the bodies on their environment. This theory brings lots of advantages to our lives. For example, it allows us to construct buildings more efficiency and also with lower cost due to massively produced materials, less labors can be used during the construction process. For building construction, the mechanics is one of the most significant parts to be considered. Architects and engineers have to design the building or structural system under this theory. However, mechanization is closely related to functionalism. The approaches of mechanization is indeed practical, thus the forms of buildings are slowly simplified throughout the centuries. Most of the ornaments are seen as unnecessary, finally they are sacrificed under the mechanization. Modern buildings become more and more unsophisticated, simple lines and geometries are popular elements in constructing a building.
In my video, I would like to show the mechanized and dehumanized process of a city.
Originally, the city was full of different styles of buildings and appeared to be colorful, especially at night when the lights have been switched on. The atmosphere is cozy and full of richness. The personalities of each building are shown by different shapes, heights, materials and colors. Each building is to be constructed as a piece of unique sculpture. However, with the mechanization started in the city, the buildings gradually lose their identities. Eventually, the city is assimilated as the same style with the same color which appears to be boring and cold, also loses its identity. The robotic buildings are finally out of control, the whole city works as a huge machine which creates the atmosphere of sadness and emptiness.

Article review

Aspects of Mechanization in design: the rise, evolution and impact of mechanics in architecture by A. Tzonis.
From:
http://www.bk.tudelft.nl/dks/publications/online%20publications/1980-HPS-Aspects%20of%20Mechanization.htm

This article mainly focuses on discussing the relationships between architecture and machine and impact of mechanics in architecture. Mechanization is defined as the use of machines to replace manual labor or assist human’s muscular required work. It is applied in architecture in early centuries. For example, Alberti's built-in piping system that allowed the owner of the house to eavesdrop in every room and Hero of Alexandria's steam-operated automatically opening temple door. Even now mechanization still plays a significant role in architecture. One of famous ideas developed from it is that building could be treated as a machine. This idea is contrast to the older theory of architecture in human approaches which is based on human’s body proportion and viewed a building as a breathing body and not as an inanimate object. Mechanization gives a great strike to traditional architecture idea. However, nowadays, it is seen as the agents of evil which had dehumanized the man-made environment and is considered as a method for massively production and construction only. In conclusion, although the mechanization may destroy the identity of city, it is still a catalyst in the creation of a new methodology in design and gives a new philosophy of construction and planning of buildings.

Assignment 2 video

This one is a silent version.

15 panel storyboard

Idea of vedio

The story starts from a "line set". Then one object of "line set" "wake up". Then it has a different idea/thinking. Through different experience and exploration, it reaches the idea of "curve". Then the idea is more and more mature and finally remove the "line" style. At last, it starts to exlpore the more change from tradition set.

The vedios are mainly formed by some my previous videos, new videos, images and music.

(description of each scence and transition are marked on the storyborad)

Reference vedio

Transition ideas from reference vedio

This is one of videos about Crazy Frog. In this vedio, it shows the fast moving scence and feeling successfully. In some transitions, slow motion and zoome in/out technoque are used. These techniques can be applied to my assignment 2 video.

15 images related to architectural content: curve and line

Ideas from the 15 images

Curves and lines are the basic patterns of every building. In tradition, most old buildings are formed by lines pattern because of the limited technology on construction or materials. Therefore, the building style is like a set, a "line set". However, with the rapid developments of technology and materials, more and more amazing curved building can be built. It is like a "curve set". In assignment 2, I would like to show the set changes from "line" to "curve".

7 videos

1. reborn

2. transform

3. order

4. distort

5. fit

6. dissolve

7. growth

7 sketches

1. reborn - a new form of the same objects created by particular arrangement

2. transform - the objects' characteristics are changed from hard to soft through the shief motion

3. order - a scrabble squares formed a new form by following special movement

4. distort - the hard characteristic of brick is changed to soft in motion

5. fit - a different size of object finally changed the size and colour to fit the whole set

6. dissolve - a pont dissolves into many points, then experience it by moving camera

7. growth - a box came out to split and enlarge to increase the height and become a part of the land

Meaning of "Set" (revised)

Set

Set is like an arrangement based on some particular rules or specific orders. It can be a combination of objects which are similar or different.

For a group of different objects, a new object could be composed and then generate a new object with visual impact. Set is like a “growth” direction to develop different objects’ distinguishing features.

For a group of similar objects, the characteristic of each object could be changed, such as the shape and texture, to give an illusion. Thereby, set is like a process of combination to distort or give a “reborn” to the original objects. For instance, a sea of square can be formed as a curve shape through special arrangement.

In architecture, each unit or room is a small and individual set that define the interior space. Through different arrangements of rooms, a new set can be created. In other words, set is like a rule to define space.
